SCP-087-B is a small experimental horror game loosely based on SCP-087. You find yourself inside a set of randomly generated dark hallways and staircases with something lurking below you, and the only way you can go is deeper into the darkness. How deep can you go?

The game was inspired by HaversineΓÇÖs game SCP-087. It started off as an extremely simple minigame I wrote one weekend just for fun, but it got so much attention and positive comments that I took it a bit further, adding more floors, different kinds of rooms and random events.

STORY

SCP. To secure, contain and protect. The SCP Wiki website is dedicated to collecting fictional stories about strange, paranormal “artifacts” that are kept in isolation by the foundation. The stories range from downright creepy to off the wall weird and sometimes even funny.

One of these case files is 087- a stairwell located at an unnamed college campus. Here’s the description from the website: “SCP-087 is an unlit platform staircase. Stairs descend on a 38 degree angle for 13 steps before reaching a semicircular platform of approximately 3 meters in diameter. Descent direction rotates 180 degrees at each platform. The design of SCP-087 limits subjects to a visual range of approximately 1.5 flights. A light source is required for any subjects exploring SCP-087, as there are no lighting fixtures or windows present. Lighting sources brighter than 75 watts have shown to be ineffective, as SCP-087 seems to absorb excess light. Subjects report and audio recordings confirm the sound of a crying, pleading child estimated to be located approximately 200 meters below the initial platform. However, any attempts to descend the staircase have failed to bring subjects closer to the source. The depth of descent calculated from Exploration IV, the longest exploration, is shown to be far beyond both the possible structure of both the building and geological surroundings. At this time, it is unknown if SCP-087 has an endpoint.”

The popularity and sheer creepiness of SCP-087 motivated someone into developing it into a first person game using the Unity engine. The objective is simple- venture your way down the decrepit, freaky stairwell and make it to the game’s end. The catch is: you never know when it’ll end. Maybe on floor 5, maybe on floor 105.

SCP-087-B isn’t related to a specific SCP story, but more of a spiritual sequel to SCP-087. They’ve swapped the stairwell for long, narrow corridors and you’re objective is much like B’s predecessor- keep walking until you make it to the end of the game and you don’t have a clue when that end will happen. Games can last from 10 minutes to 30. It’s all randomly generated.
GAMEPLAY

There’s little gameplay to talk about in the SPC series; all you can do is walk. In 087 you head down the dank, pitch-black stairwell with only a flashlight to light your way. The only way to progress through the game is to head further and further down into the unknown.

087-B is exactly the same, but you roam through brick hallways instead of going down stairs (once again with nothing but a flashlight).
PRESENTATION

Here’s where both games shine. 087′s atmosphere gave me the jitters from the start. The stairwell is dark, dirty and rusted and your flashlight only lights a few steps ahead of you. You spend the entire time walking into what feels like the unknown. As you progress down the weird sounds increase and your surroundings seem to alter around you. There’s heavy footsteps behind you and what sounds like breathing right by your ear. It’s very eerie.
B’s atmosphere was less scary to me, and yet it scared me more in the long run. The corridors don’t look very frightening- just red brick. What’s scary is how claustrophobic it feels.
You have about as much space to walk as the width of your body and, aside from a few feet ahead of you, you’re staring into darkness. They added weird, haunting music in the background to accompany all the noises you hear.
I found B to be more successful in scares because (I say this SO rarely for horror type things) you see more. There’s more that comes at you and there’s even chases. 087 does offer some jump scares, but mostly the real scare is the finale.
I can’t say much more without spoiling anything! I don’t like giving away all the scares.
FINAL THOUGHTS

To me, these games were genuinely scary. They may be incredibly basic and nothing to brag about in the graphics department, but they got it right in all the right aspects. 087 an B were created to terrify the senses. The sights and sounds had me scared to carry on through the games and left me jittery long after they were over. My friends had to coax me to continue through B after the first jump scare.
